Theo had never planted anything before, but his grandmother handed him a small paper packet and said, “This is a sunflower seed. Plant it, water it, and wait.”
“Wait for what?” Theo asked.
“You’ll see,” she said, smiling.
Theo dug a little hole in the dirt by the back step, dropped the seed in, and covered it up. He watered it that afternoon, and the next morning, he ran outside to look.
Nothing had happened.
“Maybe it doesn’t like me,” Theo said, frowning at the empty patch of dirt.
His grandmother laughed gently. “Seeds don’t work that fast. Come back tomorrow.”
So Theo watered it the next day, and the day after that. Every morning he checked, and every morning the dirt looked exactly the same. It was hard to keep waiting for something that didn’t seem to be happening at all.
On the sixth day, Theo almost didn’t bother looking. But when he did, he saw the tiniest green speck poking up through the soil.
“It’s alive!” he shouted, running to find his grandmother.
“Told you,” she said. “Now the real waiting begins.”
Theo groaned, but he kept watering the little green sprout every morning anyway. Slowly, over the next few weeks, it grew taller — first as high as his knee, then as high as his waist, then taller than he was.
One warm morning, Theo went outside and found a huge, bright yellow flower turned toward the sun, right where his tiny seed used to be.
“You waited,” his grandmother said, “and look what was worth waiting for.”
Theo grinned up at the tall sunflower. He decided that some things — the best things, maybe — needed all that waiting to turn into something this good.
